What is my old toolbox worth?

Now that I have my new Tool Vault, I need to get rid of my trusty Craftsman 3 tiered box. I'll likely put it on Craigslist but I have no idea what this type of box sells for. All three boxes are 26" wide, have ball bearings, and are lockable (somehow I kept track of the keys all these years). Here's a couple of pictures....let me know what a fair price would be:

Around here it would probably be listed for $250 or more. I'm not sure what they end up selling for, but I don't think I'd take less than $150. It all depends on the market in your area.

Or, you can do like I did and make a bolt/parts bin out of it.

My initial thought was to hang onto it, but the reality is I'm short on space. My shed has been taken over with scooters, bicycles, a little Gator, etc. My garage is only 20x20 and I just got a 56" Tool Vault with side cabinet. I'm trying to declutter my life :)

It will depend on what you see similar boxes going for on craigslist in your local area. It really varies geographically. Right now, it seems to be raining tool boxes on craigslist too. I had been looking for quite a few months and very few came up that I was interested in. It picked up in December and January has just really taken off. I bought a neat old Mac Tools stack but had a tough time making up my mind which setup to buy with all the choices available. As a con, your bottom cab has few drawers. As a plus, your top and middle chests have a fair amount of capacity because they are full depth, or close to full depth. Most Cman top chests I see listed are only 12" deep. The condition also looks to be quite good and I think yours are probably a decent build year. I could see it going for anywhere from $225 to $350, maybe $375, but again depending on your local market, I could be off. I have seen some smoking good deals lately and they skew buyer's expectations a little. I've seen a couple similar setups listed for $400, but they haven't sold and I wouldn't spend that much on them myself.

Do yourself and your potential buyers a favor. List a good ad. By that I mean, give the dimensions of the boxes W x D x H and state whether you have keys, etc. Your pics are good and illustrate the depth of the top and middle chest. Be sure to point out that those top/middle chests are deeper and your drawers are ball bearing. Personally, for me, the benefit of your top and middle chests are somewhat offset by the fewer drawers on the bottom cab. If you think your local market is too competitive right now, you might wait a few months and see if that changes. Of course, it will be taking up the space if you do.

Good luck with your sale.

In my part of the world, that setup is advertised for $250, but who knows what the final negotiated price is. I would guestimate only $175-$200  That's probably because everyone wants a wider box setup now -- including me! :lol_hitti

And do yourself a HUGE favor for top dollar: wipe it down with a damp rag, apply/buff out two coats of automotive polish/wax, then retake your pics. :rocker:

Yea, it's used, but everyone wants mint condition, you know!

Thanks fellas....$275 it is. If I get in the ballpark of $200 I'll be happy. Marty_P - your dead right on your presentation suggestions. While I don't have time to do a full wax, I did go back and give it a Windex bath. Here it is:

Excellent ad!! That will get you top $.

Detailed description, large self hosted images (not upside down, sideways, generic or out of focus).

It looks like new.

Good luck!!

Well, that went well. I had about a half dozen emails regarding my box this morning and I just shipped it off for my full asking price. I feel good that the new owner got a good box for a fair price and I got a little cash towards my new box and a bit more room in my garage. Thanks again for all the feedback.

I`ve also had good luck with C-man boxes. The last top/bottom I sold in an hour for asking price, and it was beat. I think you did well, love to have one of those middle chests.

I think the lower prices offered were accurate for a stack with the 12" depth top and intermediate, but yours was the full depth top an inter. so I think you sold fast as it WAS a great deal. I think that could have gone as high as $350 but we will never know now!

as long as you and the buyer were both happy, its a good deal all around!

Its too bad you sold them. I thought they complimented the pink garage doors nicely.

My house came with builders grade uninsulated garage doors. The only thing better than insulated garage doors are owens corning pink foam insulated doors :lol_hitti
