5. Metering wiring configurations
Neutral configuration
Historically, two methods have been used for connecting the supply neutral to the meter:
a) the main neutral is wired through the meter (referred to as “split neutral”); or
b) the main neutral is wired to the MEN point and a separate neutral wire run from the
MEN point to the meter (referred to as “shunt neutral”).
These configuration options are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. Note that the phase
connections (that would be connected to terminal marked P on the meter) are omitted from
the diagrams for simplicity.
Safety Note:
Please note that the diagrams in this guide show a left‐to‐right P – N – N – P terminal
configuration for the meters represented, viewed from the front of the meter. This represents
the common physical terminal sequence of most meters deployed in New Zealand.
However, an alternative terminal configuration of P – P – N – N may also be encountered.
Correctly identifying the terminal configuration of every meter during installation is clearly a
critical safety concern. Positive identification of terminals should be established in every case
and no assumptions should be made based on experience with other meters.

I'm not sure a document for New Zealand will accurately reflect the way things are wired in the US...

I am at my grandparents and I noticed on the meter and the pole that says "split neutral" - what does that mean?
The split Nuetral is refering to using the same nuetral for both A/B phases..
You will most likely see white and green wires in the same bus as well as two nuetral busses that are bonded together with a copper peg.

i don't know that it is different. like the document stated it could refer to the way the meter is wired.
My electrician friend was at the farm this weekend for our Thanksgiving and I asked him.
He says it's just normal 2 hots and a neutral single phase. It was probably labeled that way a while ago and the power company usually has their own way of doing stuff.
He says, "they're funny about stuff, see that feeder from the transformer? It's usually just 6ga aluminum, but they require 2(0) aluminum if you're running it down the mast" blah blah blah.
