Disagree? Please read the original poster's question! It wasn't about YOUR house.
If your patio door is a slider, only need a screwdriver to lift it out of the track, and I'm in.
A front door is no challenge either. Buy a high end door, and a lock to go with it, I'll bring the grinder with a cutting blade. Turn it vertical, slide it between the door and the jam, slice off the bolt in 20 seconds.
Got windows in your house, yea, glass not so good at stopping anyone. Or could simply cut a hole in the wall or roof. 18V Dewalt circular saw on the back of a roof, out of sight of the neighbors. 4 quick cuts, into the attic.
The same storage unit that I had stuff stolen from, had a fire a couple of years before. The Fire Dept never bothered to cut the locks to find which units were on fire (all were smoking in the row), so they simply cut each steel door apart in a matter of minutes.
My advice... buy a LOUD alarm system. If someone wants in, they'll get in. But if you have a loud alarm, they're not going to have time to "shop". Might smash and grab, but won't be backing up a moving truck.
I won't specify what my alarm system is, but parts have been modified. I highly recommend these sirens:
http://www.smarthome.com/72762/Elk-Outdoor-120dB-Horn-Siren-SS30/p.aspx 120dB. A few of these going off at once, is enough to cause a bowel emptying experience!
I may not be able to keep them out, but I can get them to leave quickly, and the CCTV system will let me see who I need to go visit.
I used to work for an alarm company. The other half of the shop was a lockshop. Couldn't stop people from breaking in, but could prevent them from taking anything. One of the commercial break-ins was through a wall - which is why I mentioned it as a possibility. They didn't trigger a door/window sensor, but the didn't realize the PIR dectector had triggered a silent alarm. Cops nabbed 'em before they were finished loading up.
If you do nothing else (anyone/everyone), please buy some alarm system decals, and put them on your doors and windows. That alone will deter many from breaking in. Doesn't matter if you have an alarm or not. Trick I learned from the alarm company owner.
