Hi folks, I'm a diesel mechanic apprentice and I am in the market for a striking prybar set. I already have a 24 in. Snap-On wrecking bar and a 48 in. Snap-On prybar. They are great prybars but I need a smaller set for smaller jobs. I plan on striking on them with a 4 pound hammer if need be. I don't want the handles falling off or their tips breaking on me. Along with that, I want them to be very sturdy. I do not plan on using them as chisels or punches. I just want to have the option available of striking my prybars in combination with reach. I'm open to ANY brand and price, as long as they're the best in durability I care less about comfort. Right now I'm leaning towards Snap-on and Matco. What do you guys recommend?

Can't go wrong with Snap On! I used them day for years without any issues. If one does become an issue then warranty is your friend!!

I own 6 SO and 1 Mac. The Matco's are quality pry bars (several guys I've worked with have them) but the handle seem to deteriorate after time, the same is true with the mayhew and Mac set. Remember they will get plenty of fuel, break cleaner, cuts, etc…. the bar is very similar on all those models but the SO capped hard handle is my preference. Get the 42 and 54 later on! I work with diesels as well.

those matco prybars are rebadged mayhew tools

I got 2 SO prybars and 2 mayhew prybars, both are good choices

as said the mayhew handles will get chewed up after time, SO hard handle easy to clean and wont get chewed as much

Thanks guys. Great information, I'm leaning more towards Snap-On. Unless someone can prove otherwise

I have both Snap on and Matco striking pry bars. I have the snap on 4 peice set and a larger Matco one, both hold up great. The snap on ones get used daily and are often beat on.

I have the old CMan striking bars and love them, but I would double check before buying them again as everything else Cman seems to gone to ****.

thanks guys. So far I took Matco out the picture. I'm either going with Snap-On or Mayhew/Cman but I'm leaning more towards Snap-On since the truck will come to me.

If its something im going to be beating on, I prefer the Ease of Warranty route. Outside of that I have a buddy that has a Otc set, Im sure there imported but they appeared Decent.

I have 1 OTC 24" bar at work that I've had for about 4 years. It gets used for everything as the 24" fits everything I need in a heavy industrial environment. It has held up flawlessly. You are talking about the ones with the blue plastic handle with black rubber inlays, correct?

The rest of my work set is Mayhew Dominator. I've been very happy with them also.

My home sets are Mayhew Dominator and CM Pro. They CM Pro are made Mayhew.

I have snap on short 12 in?, 18 and 24 in pry bar with the striking cap. They are great unless its cold, minus 20 or more and the handles will shatter, warented all of them over the years for just that reason. The Mac set I used to have were of equal quality but held up better in the cold as the handles were rubber and not hard plastic.
