Well I build me a pretty large welding/work table 4'x10' I put it in the back right corner of my shop. The walls are unfinished at the moment and for that corner in paticular I am wondering what to put up I really would prefer not to burn my shop down. I am not sure when I will have the funds to finish the walls and ceiling but I would like to protect this corner right now. Any advise would be appreciated.

I'd probably use corregated galvanized metal screwed to 1x2 battens screwed to the wall floor to ceiling.

Watch out for the flash-burn from the shiny metal!A good choice, cement backer board might be worth considering as well.

Ya know I don't know why I didn't think about it but I have enough tan colored metal roofing to do the whole garage that is at my work place they told me once before I could have it. I really wouldn't want to do the whole garage in it but I might do that corner. How far past the table on each side would you guys recommend. I know grinding sparks can go a long way.

Use speed bumps! LOL Maybe 8 ft. The sparks loose their heat soon. IMO whats in the area is a concern. Any flammables, rags or saw dust and the like.

It likely won't catch fire, but sparks and grinding will leave marks, believe me.

(You don't have to ask how I know, do you?)

Metal transfers heat pretty fast. So space it out from any combustible surface. Id drywall the wall and then build a metal back for the bench.

I had planned on using corrugated metal roofing for my walls but I have leftover backer board from a tile job that I thought about using. I would prefer to return the backer board and get my money back, will drywall really be ok ? I don't care about the cosmetics just don't want to burn down my new garage.

drywall is fine. I work in a weld shop(I'm not a welder but I am in the same building). The things that catch on fire are rags, garbage cans and prints. If you keep flammable objects out of your welding/grinding area you will be fine. cautious is better than careless, but don't be paranoid. hanging around in the shop 30 minutes after you weld or grind should let you know if anything is smoldering.
