McMaster-Carr calls them "clip nuts" or "clip-on nuts", so I'd call that as official as it gets.

I had a summer job at Palnut/TRW. I saw lots of different fasteners get punched out, tapped, coated and even sat with the designers. It was real interesting seeing them design the different tooling stages to process slit coils of sheet metal.

Now everybody makes these....lot's of knock-offs too.

I've heard that too.

Reminds me years ago (before internet) trying to buy P clamps and the Napa guy... Howard... thinking someone was screwing with him, like wanting 5ft of falopian tube or some ID 10 T forms.
