The thread restorer kit will not take out material from the hole like a tap set will.
Better if you need a close tolerance fit. especially on ford flatheads.

Both sets are made by Kastar. The only difference is the sizes included and the price. Kastar makes the exact same kits for Snap-on as well except they sell for forty bucks more than the Craftsman.

Yes, but I bought it off of the truck, so it is higher quality, and will work twice as good (to justify the cost difference) the case says S/O so they will replace any damaged parts TO INFINITY AND BEYOND! (a quote from an old movie)lol_hitti

If you have full sets of tap & die sets, why would a guy need these?

Thread restorers like these are less likely to undercut good threads. They are made from softer steel and the taper is designed to "find" the good threads and line up the tool properly. Most often the first few threads are the ones that are damaged and it is easy to start cutting new threads slightly offset from the original ones when you use a standard tap/die to restore damaged threads. There is nothing wrong in most cases with using standard taps and dies to restore threads as long as it is done with care (as long as the tolerance of the tap/die is not sloppier than the original threads in critical applications) . I personally do not own thread restoring taps/dies myself but I would like to get some.

As I think about it, a set of thread chasers such as those depicted could be very handy in locations too tight for a regular tap, and tap socket setup; since you could use a chaser tap with a box wrench in tight quarters!
