I found this in my deceased Dad's building out back. I am 98% sure I know what it is but first want to see what you guys say and maybe learn more about it.

I figured it could be restored pretty easily or it could be wall art as is.

How about this? This shows more how it would be orientated during usage. I'll go take some more photos.

Update: Photos added.

You can see that there is a series of gearing that turns a spindle with a square hole inside the wooden bore. This should be easy now.

Ok, it is a drill!

You going to do like mr Pete and show us a video of it in use after we guess?

Chris

Bingo! I believe you are correct. The old fashioned drill bits with square tapered ends could fit into the bored end. The flat end might rest against your belly, hold the ***** lookin' device (I can't believe you said that) with your left hand, and crank with your right hand.

It won't turn now, but looks like it will clean up easily. I don't have time to clean it up right now, but will put it in queue for later. What colors should it be painted?

doesn't sound quite right to me. I don't know but it's clear that the square recessed spindle spins much faster than the crank. the iron base looks to me like it's meant to be mounted. The crank throw is so long you'd bank into your hip with every revolution if you tried to brace that base against your belly. I'm guessing it's for something like twisting rope or string - something that would require high rpm but low torque. Think of the early hand drills. Brace and bit - very high torque, very low rpm. Even the eggbeaters had nothing like the gear-up ratio this thing looksto have.

Just trying to fit a function to the form. I'd love to hear from someone who actually remembers. (Do we have any Senior members who are that Senior?)

I don't think I'd paint it, but if you must, natural for the handle, Colonial Red for the wooden body, black with gold pinstriping for the cast iron.

If you were to bolt it to a table top or post it would give a little more frame of reference. I'm guessing either a post drill or cheese grater. Or a turtle sheller. Maybe a cat skinner? Eyelash trimmer. Nope. Back hair braider.
