What is the point in 12 point sockets?

This isn't "fresh" it's been discussed over and over. If the OP had used the search function he could have read the relevant thread's information and then posted a question about a specific feature or situation, that would be fresh. Not being interested in hand holding isn't elitism.
But now you're just the guy saying to use the search function in the endless cycle of forum posts where newer users ask the same topics about the same stuff that older users have already seen. Nothing more annoying than using the search function just to find ten thousand 'use the search function' posts.

Edit: to break the cycle of banality, what is helpful is when said older users link 4-5 of the best related topics with optional snarky flair.

Nope I'm not doing work on behalf of the lazy. If the OP read through the threads and asked a question sure. As for your position that all older the threads say search for previous answers, that doesn't happen here so that argument won't work.

I think 12 points sockets were used way back when early ratchets were weak sauce. Breaker bars were used, so 12 point ment less swing to get the next bite on the nut/bolt. Same reason most box end wrenches are 12 point. Stronger ratchets killed most of that need

as others have said, some nuts/bolts have 12 point heads and require 12 point tools

On a side note, I've found 12 point box end wrenches work well to initially knock off the rust on rusty nuts/bolts, to more easily get a 6 point to go on

I come across 12pt fasteners often in my profession working on equipment and a lot of aftermarket powersports engine fasteners are 12pt

ARP fasteners are usually 12 point. On my 8.3 Cummins, the starter bolts and bolts for the rocker arms are 12 point. Working on that engine in the field can be a pain. I need SAE, metric and 12 point sockets.

In aviation maintenance, 12pt sockets are an absolute MUST. Lots of TIGHT working conditions, lots of 12pt fasteners and fastener prices are ridiculously expensive, so its important to ensure you are always using the correct tool for the job.

Before being trained as a airframe & powerplant mechanic, I didn't really see the reason for 12pt sockets or why mid-depth sockets existed, but quickly learned the importance of having full sets of quality shallow, mid and deep well 1/4" drive and 3/8" drive sockets.

Just my two cents.

All of my first tool sets were 12 pt. That was late 70s. They gripped the heads much better and worked wonderful with fine tooth ratchets at the time. Couldn't stand 6 pt sockets as they had too much slop but I do have 6 pt impact sockets and keep some in the 10, 12, and 13, 14 sizes and keep them like new for the rounded headed bolts and nuts.
