What is this and how does it work?

I acquired this from my late grandfather. It is a Craftsman "60" by Sears, Roebuck and Co. USA and Simpsons-Sears Ltd, Canada. It appears to be some type of quick-change drill chuck/clutch.

The half-round end of the philips and straight tips snap into the large "output" of the chuck.

The input (skinny shaft) appears to be "fluidly" connected to the output. I can spin it and the output spins. But if I prevent the output from turning, the input will still spin. There does not appear to be any gearing or reduction or clutch settings in this.

What's it's purpose?

Maybe it's broke and I should take it to Sears to exchange it!

it turned a drill into a screw gun back in the day before keyless chucks you put the thin end in any drill back then they were usally 1/4 chuck size than insert the drive bits into the other end

Well, I guess if it is just a primitive bit driver, it must be broke 'cause the input sure couldn't spin the output to put a screw into some butter.

Tell Sears you want a warranty replacement. That should keep them busy for a while.
