Bought this socket at a swap meet, it is a craftsman and says it is a 5/16". Clearly, it is not 5/16". Is it a mistake or some special socket?

Whitworth basically sized the tools to the size of the threaded part of the fastener instead of across the flats. :dunno:

I thought a 5/16 Whitworth (roughly 8mm bolt size) was a little over 15mm head size across flats (smaller than a dime). That looks like a quarter in the pic, a quarter is about an inch. i Think it's a 15/16 socket.

I thought i might've seen a "W" on it, but what 5/16" bolt uses a nut that is dang near an inch across? Until more evidence, better photos or a caliper is on it, I might have to lean towards 15/16" as well. All reservations held till then. lol

Spent the first 35 or so years of my life wrenching on old Triumph & BSA motorcycles and just sold my first bike last year. A 1971 Triumph Bonneville I bought in the mid 70s. I also just sold my Snap On Whitworth tools on Ebay a few months ago. I'm not sure if Snap On even sells them anymore. I know I had to have my tool guy special order them and it took quite awhile to get them. The most confusing of the old Triumphs were the changeover years from about 67-70 when you could expect to find a mix of Whitworth hardware mixed with SAE depending on what part of the bike you were working on.

In college, i traded some unwanted Whitworth tools to a a guy with a BSA thumper.
I to a political science textbook and we both thought we hosed the other guy!

Its a 5/16 Whitworth, 1/2 drive. A 15/16 would not have the neck down that has which is like how a 9/16 1/2 drive socket is. A Whitworth 5/16 would be .60 across the flats, since that is a 12 point it would be bigger looking, .693 across the points.
