would it be a worthwhile addition to a vintage Craftsman drill press? I don't even know if it would fit.

I think it could be mistaken for one of oldironfarmer's brooms.

But are you talking about the table lift mechanism? I'm sure that it could be adapted to a vintage machine. Start by checking the column diameter.

Yes, the lift mechanism. I was hoping that someone had done the same conversion to their drill press. I like broom jokes too though.
