Square D main load center/panel, located in the garage

What is this attached to the bottom of the box with two wires?

The cutout at the bottom of the pegboard is where its located

Almost looks like antenna wire?

Ding Dong!
Never seen one there either. Just be glad it's not in the attic buried under 2 feet of insulation. That's where they typically are.

I had one very similar. It was installed by a contractor for the local power company. It was used in conjunction with a time of use meter. When the time of use meter was disconnected that kind of transformer was left behind.

it is for sure a low voltage transformer. could be a door bell or part of a heating system

Exactly. My doorbell is mounted to the panel like this too. My heating system uses a similar transformer to control by the thermostat, and the gas valve, but it's mounted to a box on the ceiling.

must be a regional thing, around my neck of the woods, that is how they are always done. usually mounted to the side of the panel. if you think about it, it's gotta be mounted somewhere, you don't want it buried in a wall somewhere, and why run long romex to it when the low voltage wire is smaller, easier, and cheaper to run.
