what is this (possibly woodworking) tool?

A friend has aquired this tool. We don't know what it is for, we think some kind of woodworking. Does anyone know what it is? Can you explain how to use it?

dam missed that one, but also saw the square taper end like hand drills had?

I was just guessing.. quick google shows that it's actually a:
E.C. STEARNS Patent hollow auger complete with depth stop

You're right.. it goes on a hand drill and I'm right it works kind of like a pencil sharpener

Thanks for the suggestions all. I can see it being used to turn down a dowel to a smaller size if the blade was advanced a bit into the wood. It has a backstop too.
