I am familiar with the top box as I have had several ofer the years. I know its missing the top cover so I am not sure what to do with it from here....anyone have a spare top?

the bottom is what I really want to know about.
what is it and what is it worth

Have you seen these in person? First off, there's just no way I would pay remotely close to $600 for that set up. Maybe $150. With the missing lid to the top box, there's no way to lock it. It does offer some storage without security though.
The bottom box intrigues me as it seems somewhat familiar for unknown reasons like I've seen the design before. There is a mac logo attached to it but, it could be home made too. The raised trim around the drawer sections is different.:dunno:

F the top and get the bottom. Those were made for one year in the 60's. There is a set in vintage toolbox thread.

The bottom box looks like a KRA-500 DELUXE ROLL- CAB from the 1965 catalog or a KRA-500A DELUXE ROLL- CAB from the 1967 catalog.

Take a look at my post in the thread linked below as it contains just about everything you need to know about these boxes .....except the price.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86861

So here are the prices.

KRA-500 DELUXE ROLL- CAB list price as of Jan /1/1965 $ 284.31

KRA-500A DELUXE ROLL- CAB list price as of Jan /1/1967 $ 362.89

Top is a KR 537D. If you can get it fairly cheap, i.e. $75, grab it. Sure, you'd rather have it complete, but if you want it to use in your garage, it's a great box, and not having the top doesn't affect the usability one bit. I have a KRA 59B I picked up without a top and it's a great box.

As for the bottom, Bart is right. Mid 1960s toolbox. Those appear to be fairly rare, so I suspect that's the reason the seller is asking such a high price for the combo.

I have a similar top that I picked up at an auction for $10. It sits on my workbench under some cabinets where there wouldn't be room to open the top anyway so it's perfect for that location.

I'd agree that $600 seems crazy for that. Around here, I'd expect to pay $150 for the pair.

For how rare the bottom is, I would go $300 for it. I paid $250 for a '62 kr 300 rolla bench and was happy with what I paid. That box isn't that rare, I passed on four before I found this one with the full drawers. The top box on the other hand, $50. Those are very common and there is no reason to settle for that one for anymore. That box looks orginal, they where painted that way, but the wood grain does look to be missing.

I guarantee you, just about anywhere, if that box is posted for $50 it would be gone before you could email the seller.

All I'm saying is the top chest is so common, he could easily find a nicer one in less then a month, there simple is no reason to pay big money for that chest righ there

I would pass...too beat up. I would wait to find a box like that top box, with a matching bottom, 100% complete, in good to fair condition...for $600.

My only interest in the top box would be to sell it, I have a nice one already

My potential interest is on the bottom, maybe
I originally thought it was a different newer version from his description but it's not.
So now I am wondering about what the bottom is worth realistically. Either I will buy it and fix it up and use it in the garage got something like a work bench work station or never know I may make it so nice that I use it in the house for something.

What I am trying to figure out is what the current (collector) value is verses what a restored one is worth

i stand by my $300 price, the bottom looks to be in pretty good shape, take the damn stickers off and I bet it would look fine as. It is rare, it has that. It is basically the first 40" box with no full width drawers so storage is so so. If you had the full set set, top, middle and bottom, I could see be worth a pretty penny to a collectors. To a casterkick myself, $300.
