What is this socket used for?

Just ran across this oddball. Snap-on MC40. The date code is 1958. It is 1/4" drive. ? I googled it and a bunch of modern tech stuff came up. I'm sure one of you out there has an old catalog or some personal experience.

There may be some carburetor that socket is used to adjust. Folks here will know in detail if that’s in the right direction.

Here are the dimensions of this mystery socket.
The OD = .800"
OAL = 1.25"
ID = .500 and is .865" deep
The shallow C-bore on the business end has an OD of .685" and is only .035" deep.
The four cross cuts are at 90 degrees. They are .095" wide by .195" deep.

I won't say it couldn't be used on wing nuts, but they would have to be pretty tiny ones. I'm pretty onboard with the carb adjuster idea. Still let's find the definative answer! Thanks folks!

I think it is a socket for some carburetor. 1950 catalog shows it is a large ring inserted socket...

I'm trying to picture how, though, and what O-ring, on what carb. I thought everyone just used fingers and a little grease. :)

It looks like the o-ring would fit snug inside the lower relief area of the socket. You would then lower it into place on a shaft and use a pick in the side slots to gradually push the o-ring down on the shaft. Then keep pushing it down untill it would fall in it's groove on the shaft?

My understanding of the Snap On numbering system is that “M” stood for “Midget” or 9/32” Drive. “TM” is “Tiny Midget” or 1/4 Drive.

I can always remember this because the British firm Britool used the same “Midget” designation for 9/32” drive, wheras their 1/4” drive had a “D” prefix for. “Dwarf”.

The “C” suffix is of course for “Carburetor” so we know it’s a 9/32 carb tool, before we know the details.

I wonder when they stopped producing 9/32” drive tools?

Commercially, during the war, Dave. The 1945 catalog was all 1/4 drive. But they continued making it for customers, especially aeronautics manufacturing, which favored it, into the 50s. I did the math once on its implicit advantages. I'll see if I can find it.

I think it's for pushing a wire ring down into the accelerator pump bore. The ring is used to retain a check valve ball. It's been a long time since I've been into an old Carter carburetor.
