what is this thing on my wall?

bad job of installing a door bell transformer? transformer for HVAC system controls/thermostat?

Its a transformer for the door bell. HVAC transformer are usually mounted in the furnace/air handler.

I agree. Its not the best job but ive seen worse(wires coming out of hole cut in sheetrock with transformer dangling from wall!
