Buddy just bought a house and this was bolted to the roof of the garage. Any ideas what it is?

Interesting homemade contraption that rotates, moves up and down and slides sideways a bit. Who knows what was mounted on it though.

Easy Peasy... it's a directional antenna tuner for the isolenticular dish (that the former owner removed) so they could communicate with the Big Giant Head... --giggles--

We did stuff line that for Radio antennas... so yeah, maybe. If the former owners spent time consuming "mass quantities" and had tall, pointy heads... just go with it. --giggles--

I wonder if that was originally part of a gun mount? Like military? Any good navy surplus near you?

Obviously not originally designed for ceiling mounting.

Maybe a milling attachment for a lathe?

The part mounted to the ceiling does strike me as such (milling attachment) and the other part appears as a well self built part for a ???? Harry

Red Arrow: This appears to be a base to use the Milling Attachment on something else, Yellow Arrow: Probable Lathe Milling Attachment, This would normally have a platten/vise(ish) piece here, but in the past many thigs were available and may not be even thought about today, Green Arrow holder added for something that mounted with a hole [Spool or Roll, Etcetera]

No idea what it is, but it does appear to be something for machining or some other piece of equipment. By chance are there any indications on the floor that there was a piece of equipment below that? Maybe some cut off mounting bolts or a large discolored area of cement?

Looking at how it's attached to the joists, looks like bolted through 2 2x6's, back when a board was actually 2" by 6". The bolts are offset from the joists so possibly connected to a piece of angle bolted above. Designed to hold some weight beyond the weight of the contraption.

The base and "upright" section look like it came from an old radial arm saw. The u-channel coming off the upright looks like a davit that's upside down. The round pipe piece looks more like a handle and there looks like a roller or bearing between that plate and the davit. Rotated about 180, the eyebolt could be used as an anchor for a pulley or small hoist to get something from floor to bench level. That's what I would use it for. [emoji848]
