Is this some sort of telescoping extension? It's for a 3/8" drive. The knurled part spins which elongates the end, or shortens it if you spin it the other way. What would be the purpose of this tool? Why not just use, say, a 3 in. extension?

spinning the ring should allow you to lock it on the ratchet or other holder. does it work that way?

It's an adjustable extension when you need something in between standard lengths. What brand is it?
There aren't any markings on it except "patent pending." Apparently, the little knurled wheel only either extends it out or retracts in back in. Nothing else. Here it a image of the tool in question, fully extended, matched up against a 6" extension, a 3" extension, and a 1" extension, respectively. Has anyone every found themselves in a situation where they needed an extension such as this one? I really don't see any practicality in the tool to tell you the truth.

Depending on where you are working, it may be needed. A recessed bolt that is blocked by a frame or something else would be a good example. 2" extension isnt long enough, 3" will not physically fit, so 2.5 is perfect.
