I always thought a tack driver was better BUT that's interesting

The larger tool, bottom pic, is a slate nail remover--I believe. One was left at the home I recently bought__though mine is a different brand and appears to be a bit larger. It has a slide handle for yanking the nails from slate roofs, so that the slate is not damaged.
