Bought this today at a thrift shop for 2 dollars just because it looks old and interesting. But what the hell is it???

It works pretty much like pliers, but has a cam lock thing on top. I looked up the patent number and see that it's a "saw setter" whatever that means.

On one side is stamped:

NOS.
224789
235374
507152

And on the side of one grip is stamped:

Morrills Pats
Trade (3 weird symbol/proof marks) Mark
pat no. 30572

it's used to set the teeth on a hand saw to the proper kerf after sharpening. something that doesn't happen very often now . My Grandfather was a carpenter and apparently would bring his tools home every day and sharpen for the next days work

Apparently this one is a "Morrill 3 & 4 later design"

Last patent seems to be like 1897. I wonder how old this thing is!

Seems like a neat old tool to play with. I see there's some videos on them. But I still can't see how this is supposed to do the job it's made to do! Very strange old voodoo here!

Not strange. You squeeze it, and it pushes one tooth one way and the rest of the blade the other way. It's just a saw set.
