My mother was recently cleaning out the garage and gave me a bunch of stuff she had in there, among those was this vise:

What is this type of vise used for? Am I missing pieces of it to attach to something or is it used as is?

Thanks for the help!

Looks like a drill press vise to me. I found a similar one on ebay. Are there slots down the sides of it underneath? Could have originally came with some sort of plate to bolt to the drill press table.

I am not home at the moment, just snapped that picture as I ran out of the house this morning. I do not recall seeing any holes on the bottom but I will inspect it when I get home later and take a look.

Papa: yes it's a drill press vise. it can sit on it's own under the drill, but bit could get stuck and send it spinning. safer to have it in another drill press vise that bolts to your drill press or in the jaws of a vise like this one.

not worth a lot, but handy if you can use it and an old US made one too.

Excellent, I appreciate the information guys! Now its just time to get rid of this oversized tool box I have been storing forever for my brother-in-law so I can build myself a work bench area and put it and some other tools to use.

JLH....that was my thought about those indents too.

Drill press vise. Drill press vises don't necessarily have to have a means to affix the vise to the table, actually better in some cases to allow the work to float. Although with those step cutouts you can use toe clamps to fix the vise.

That one on ebay is close, it looks like the swivel base slides into the bottom from the side which is good to know.

I'll use it tonight without any base and see how I like it. I need to drill out the holes in the lowering blocks for my 56 Ford so they sit over the studs on the leaf springs.

Papa: just be careful if you are not clamping it down. go slow and smooth and it should work fine. if it hangs up and starts spinning hit the off switch quick on your Drill press.

You could add to it or just use it as is, with a fence added to the table to keep it from rotating.

It's called a hand vice. We actually made them in machine shop class in community college.
