Found this in a job lot of mostly machinist tools and I've never come across one, what's it for/how does it work?

If it's a pop riveter, its the most serious pop riveter I've seen...

Maybe for Cleco fasteners? (I've never used em, so....)

Thats a big pop rivet gun, I own like that, its a cheaper one. A good one is call "Big Daddy".

Yes that's what its for. Mybuddy has 1 at his body shop and some window regulators use big rivets.

if the nose is 3-4 inches long its great for ford door handles

Yeah, pop rivet tool. I've got one at work (Tool Aid brand) for window regulators that use those big *** rivets.

Only German cars I've ever owned were VW, and I never paid attention as I never needed to touch the window regs. But given the A2 Golf GTI had the final drive gear riveted to the diff (ugh... bad memory there), I shouldn't be surprised.

I've used it a lot on older model GM cars and trucks (last one I did was a '98ish K1500 Chevy p/u) A lot of different makes use, or have used beefy rivets to secure the regulator to the inner door panel due to the fact that they don't back off under use like bolts can. I've removed quite a few door panels to re-locktite and secure loose window regulator bolts that cause door rattles or worse.

I've got a MUCH smaller rivet gun. Same operation though.
Used it to replace a regulator on my '87 Ford Ranger. Turns out the rivets were way too small in diameter and too long as well. I used several different size washers to take up the slack and it worked out ok.
