What is this?

A few years ago we converted to central air from a gas fired boiler. The company removed the boiler but left some of the wiring that I am trying to clean up. I am curious to what this item is. It has 120 to it as well as what looks like the old thermostat wires. Is it a co monitor?

That is a doorbell chime transformer. There is a possibility they used it for the thermostat controls for the old boiler system.

Disconnect the exposed low voltage wires and see if your door bell still works.

How do you know that without knowing the output voltage ???? It could very well be the 24 Volt transformer that is still being used with the new system ? No place to be guessing in my opinion

That could be a transformer hooked up to tip and ring. Activate something with an incoming call? just my guess.

It was hooked up to the same conduit feeding an boiler in an enclosed space. I didn't think it was that was that far of a leap.

If it only has two possible wire connections, then it is not a transformer. A transformer has a primary and one or more secondary, to either step down, step up, or isolate 1:1.

Looks like it is adding inductance to a circuit for a reason, if those are low voltage cloth covered wires that is. Or to keep a load on a circuit if those are 120v wires.

The primary connections are likely inside the box it was mounted to. I've not seen one of those low voltage transformers with exposed primary terminals. That would be a bad shock hazard.

It has upstream wire that is definately 120v the down stream is cloth covered wire that is breaking down. The new thermostat is fed from the new furnace and the doorbell doesn't work, so I guess it can go away. Thank yall for all the great responses. I really appreciate it.

The other 2 wires go in thru the cover plate it is mounted on.

Looks like either a doorbell chime transformer or it supplied (still supplies?) low voltage to your thermostat.

The other 2 wires go in thru the cover plate it is mounted on.

The bandaids are from splitting kindling. My boy scout hatchet has been dull for over 20 years, so I finally decided to sharpen it. I got it shaving sharp like it should be, and then promptly forgot I sharpened it. Enter the bandaids.

Most likely the old xformer for the heat. Seen probably one hundred exactly like it over the years...
