Any ideas? The handle appears to be cast. The rest is iron pipe or similar flattened and curved at the end. Roughly 4' long. Homemade gadget other than the handle?

I pulled it from the scrap truck and use it for reaching to the front of my truck bed and pulling stuff back to me.

It could be an ash hook for a steam boiler. Used to even out the fire and push the ash out when cleaning the firebox an the end of the day/run.

Ones that I'm used to seeing are more-like a 'Captain Hook' end, to fit into the narrow semicircular opening in the perimeter circumference of the manhole cover. That flat end looks like it's too-wide to fit into that typical hole.

Is there enough space between the female street-ring and the manhole cover to allow that flattened piece to slip-between the manhole cover and the ring, so you could then lever-up the manhole cover?

Being all metal and cast at that says heat to me.. so I went looking..

I think it's a Slag skimmer used to skim the slag off the top of Moulton metal during casting.. best ask old Iron farmer.. he's the expert..lol

One of my sons, who is a blacksmith, walked down the yard carrying one of these this afternoon.. I thought it looked familiar! His is the rake thing he uses to stir up and level out the coke fuel in his forge, and rake it over a piece of metal when he's heating it.
He says it could also well be used for skimming slag off metal when casting though.
