What is this?

Can someone identify what this is for me? I acquired a pair of them with a salvaged Workmate. A search for Workmate accessories failed to identify.

Great idea! I posted there first, but since no one has identified the item, I decided to broaden my appeal for help with a separate thread.

Including a ruler in the picture would be a big help, so we can see what size it is. Without something else for reference, it could be an inch long or a foot long.

Great idea! Picture attached. The item is about 2.5 inches tall and fits snugly into the 20mm hole on a workmate. However, no one on the Workmate thread has identified it and a google search for Workmate accessories has failed to find an answer. I am hoping someone on here has encountered this item and tell me what it is.

Bench Dog as others have mentioned. Notice in your picture, the width of the two legs is the same as the diameter of the hole. You put those in the top holes and bottom holes, put your piece in between and tighten up the workmate.

The consensus is that this is a bench dog. I still have questions.
This picture is a close-up of the item next to a standard WM bench dog. On the item on the right:
1- Why are the legs so long and thin? - wouldn't think this would take as much stress during clamping as the one on the left.
2- Why is there so much space between the legs?
3- What is the triangular shaped opening in the top part for?

I appreciate everyone's input. I am just trying to figure out what this specific item is designed for as I have no clue why it is the way it is. The only thought I had was it was some kind of special dog to hold up a sign?

There are no markings on it at all. The only WM connection, to my knowledge, is that a pair of these were inserted in the holes of the WM that I rescued from the side of the road. I have thought of just throwing them away, but I suffer from this compulsion of wanting to know what any tool I encounter is and how to use it. Something designed like this just has to have a purpose, right? And I might have that very need ... someday.

It absolutely is a bench dog. There are holes in the workmate and these fit in the holes and secure your work when you tighten up the clamps/cranks.

Looks like a dog but not a very strong one. Could it have been used in packaging and intended to be discarded?

Looks like the slot is made to hold a quick-grip clamp laying on its back. 4 of those dealies would hold a pair of clamps and you could do a panel glue-up.

Might be for a aftermarket bench. I found an old Workmate at the lake dump and it needed a new top. While I was making a new top i mentioned what I was doing to a buddy. We calls me a day later saying his neighbour had a near new Workmate for $20. I got him to buy it for me. It was after market not the aluminum like mine but lighter steel.
Guess what the dogs didn’t fit either. But the top sure is purdy.

Aftermarket exactly. Or a different brand of "Workmate" with a different set up and specialty dogs to hold some sort of specialized device that is specific to the company.
