What is this?

I just picked this up at an estate sale. It's about 12" long. The spring loaded legs move up and down. Anyone have an idea as to what it is?

Perhaps some sort of clamping device. Maybe even home made version of one.

Possibly a rim stretcher/clamp used on early cars to open the rims enough to slide on the spoked part of the wheel. Or compress it to get the tire on the rim.

Only the outer rim came off leaving the spoked hub on the car.

I don't see how you could exert much force to stretch anything substantial, such as a fence. Looks like it would be all muscle powered with little leverage.

Maybe a shoe or boot stretcher since there are two "legs"? Not a lot of effort needed for this use and not an unreasonable size for the application, either.

Yeah, as usual, a little scale would be nice.

I agree. A scale ref would help. The OP did say it was about 12 inches long, though. That was the reason for my not unreasonable size for a shoe stretcher comment.

The pack of cigarettes should give a sense of scale. The guy made k98 mauser stocks as a hobby. I thought it had something to do with that, but I don't see how. This one has me stumped.

Theoretically speaking, you must take under consideration the whole aspect of the situation. Not all tools are saw sets, in this we all agree, but most tools can be utilized in the manufacturing or use of the aforementioned saw set.

I can't believe you found that post. It's too puny to be used as a brick hauler. It's kind of small to be used for cooking. At least I know it's not a one off homemade piece.

Are your two pieces joined at the top end, as they look in this photo? Both items seem to be 3-4" apart at one end, but connected, but it's not shown in yours or their pix.

The fireplace spit/cooking support might if there were another set. Still, at only ~12" long, they might be a bit short for cooking.

My friend thought it was for a scale or some type of balance bar/scale. The end of.it has a notch to possibly hang it.

The “Lady Leg” shape used to be commonly used for loose joint calipers from maybe the 1700s up thru the late 1800s.
