I was expecting to get a 1/4 set with the lines on them, making it easy to tell my metric from my sae. Instead these show up.. They are missing chrome around them in 2 spots. Was this factory?

yes, factory, just some of the older ones were like this, they sometimes bring a premium on ebay.

Those look used from the pic and well used in the spots missing chrome.

I have a couple of sets like this that are great but some are missing chrome in those same spots.

Yes, factory. I have both shallow and deep metric sets in 1/4 and 3/8 drive that I bought in the late 1970's and a shallow 1/2" drive set also.

That style was discontinued around 1979 or maybe 1980 and they went with the lines.

Those lines came from the factory in black. There is no missing chrome. I have some and the black wears off over time. Not sure what the factory black coating was. I think they are really cool.
