It's a Chinese vise that comes in many sizes and brand names.

It's generally considered low-quality, but it may work well for you depending on what you are looking to do with it.

Paper weight, boat anchor, wheel chock, door stop, thing to drop on cartoon coyote's head, or just scrap iron.

Don't scrap it. It's not terrible at $40 and not useless, it's just not awesome like many vises around here.

Not bad for holding stuff while you straighten, drill, heat, grind, hacksaw, etc. Just don't get crazy cranking on the handle or banging on it and it will hold you over until you find a better one, which you will do if you hang around here long enough.

I don't think its the same vise I was just looking at it and it only weighs 35 pounds this one is close to 60 pounds.

If it weighs 60 lbs, its a much higher grade vise then the Usual ChiCom vises like that.

It also doesn't have the tel tail Chromed handle hardware that the ChiComs usually have.

It it from Asia? :dunno: but probably.

Did you get screwed? @ 60 lbs, I don't think so, or at least not royally so...

Might want to delete the pics that your address on that box shows in, and repost new pics without the box.

Paranoid much?

That was good advise. If you think ID theft is something that happens to others, but not yourself, think again. It's not a matter of If any more, but when...

I've had to have several credit cards canceled, and I'm pretty careful (We also shred everything and before we had a shredder I burned all the old bank/bill papers I was done with). The people I do business with aren't apparently, for the number of times it's happened...

Thats an OLDER chinese vise from what I can tell. In the 90s they were selling these at wholesale clubs for about a hundred bucks if I recall correctly. I know a few people that have them, and I am not a fan but they will do most jobs. I do not really care for the swivel jaws but a ton of people do. You did not get beat at $40 at all, if that is what you are worried about.

I would remove the jaws leaving this section and make a light out of it. Then mount it upside down

No offense but I hate these things. Whenever I see a CL ad that says "Big Cast Iron Machinist Vise" I get all excited and then this type of image pops up.

At $40 you probably got a usable vise.

I had no idea Palmgren made that style vise, but apparently so!

56 lbs BTW...

The Palmgren is probably way better then the similar looking chicom vises. Notice the knob on the back that locks it in 8 different positions. It also has a lifetime warranty.

Dumb question. I think I have heard some of you talk of Palmgren before, but I don't much of them. Are those any good and where are they made. Also I didn't mean to rip so much on that vice in my earlier post. Those vises are like adjustable wrenches, some guys love them and have no problems and other guys won't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

I have one just like it, and it has served me well... Spend the other 360 bucks you would've spent on a Wilton on some good hand tools that actually matter.

The Wilton equivalent of his vise is no where near $400. it's about double the ChiCom versions, but is also heavier. (46lbs?)

Even the Palmgrens are more ($220) but I have no clue on the COO

Palmgren is mostly know for drill press and Mill vises, as well as precision rotary tables. Top quality, and AFAIK made in the US. The bench vise with the rotating head (the only bench vise in their catalog that I found,I'm not sure about for COO. Palmgren is usually good about casting their name into what they make, and if the name is in it, it's not showing in any pics I have seen. :dunno:
