What Laser Distance Measurer Are You Using?

Obviously, a normal tape measurer is easy enough to operate, and the price is right. But I occasionally find myself in situations where it would be handy to have a laser distance measurer.

Years ago I bought one, but when I went to use it the other day it was completely dead -- even after swapping out the batteries. Not much of a loss, as it was a cheap model that I didn't always trust.

Hoping to find a good, accurate model that I can keep for several years.

So I am curious what you guys are using, and would recommend for the money?

Fluke 411D - it's obviously not the best one, but the accuracy is stunning over both short and long distances. It's never missed a beat. Hope this helps.

Another Fluke 411D user. A truly useful little tool, and it's worked flawlessly for a number of years now. COO Hungary on mine.

I have a Hilti PD5 and absolutely love it.

Pricey I know but I purchased it when Home Depot was clearing out their in-store hilti and stacked it up with a coupon to score it for $50.

Kudos to the Hilti owners! Everything Hilti I've touched has been awesome. It just comes w/ an initial price tag I don't like. :) Any tricks to getting one for less than $300?

Any users of the Dewalt DW03050? Seems to have really good precision (1.5mm) and a backlight screen, which would be nice in dark spots. It's $100 on HD's site, but online only and sold out. Slightly higher on Amazon @ $107, but I can't have it today. :(

Other ones I'm considering are the Fluke 414D, Bosch GLM50 and Bosch DLR130K. Both the Bosch's are available in-store @ HD for similar prices to Amazon (but w/ tax).

Where can you buy Fluke's locally?

I'd like to touch and feel the the measurer before I buy it.

Bravo! I am indeed jealous of that score.

My last was a bosch (company tool, not mine) i really want one of the bluetooth ones - but probably going to go with a bosch again; not so incredibly expensive, and my old one never seemed to need a recalibration.

Been using an Austrian made Stanley FatMax TLM100 since mid 2008.

Although it's basically an entry level Leica Geosystems Disto in a Stanleyfied casing, it's nothing special (no better than 1/4" accuracy). As it's got a Class IIIa LASER, it's limited to 100 feet and is pretty useless outdoors. Even so, it was relatively cheap. and an absolute boon when we were house hunting.

I have had good luck with my Bosch. I was really impressed with its accuracy. I have one in my garage and I keep one in my truck for doing estimates. My oldest one is around 5 years old and it has not given me any trouble.

I have this Bosch. I like it and have no complaints. Other than it was a bit more expensive when I got it. Way it goes though.

Another vote for Bosch. Very accurate. Works great outdoors. I check it with a tape occasionally and it's always spot on. Don't know how I got along without it.

I have 2.

#1 is a Disto D5. Works good to 300', if you can hold it steady enough. ( Sometimes I carry a wood dowel with a 1/4x20 cap screw glued on, and thread the D5 onto the bolt. It has a TV camera built in and shows the "target area" on a built in screen, with 1x, 2x and 4x magnification. It also has some math functions, like adding measurements of fence segments when walking a crooked fenceline. Ir will also calculate heights by measuring to the top and bottom of something. ( Remember the old high school A squared plus B squared equals C squared? ) The laser is visible so it works in the dark, as long as you can see the target. It is accurate to 1/16".

# 2 is a Nikon Laser1200, 7x25 @ 5 degrees. I use this from when the D5 won't work any more to over 1200 yards. This uses an invisible laser, and you look through it, like a monocular ( 1/2 of a pair of binoculars ) but it needs decent light to see through it and pick out the target.

Between the 2, I'm set.
