1.) What size screws do I use to attach the 1x2's to the studs (I have drywall)

2.) When I mount the 1x2's what size screws do I use to attach the pegboard to the 1x2's ( I know you want the screws to go through the drywall and into the studs when mounting the 1x2's to the drywall but you dont want the screws to go though the dry wall when mounting the pegboard to 1x2's, right?)

Thanks for any adivce.

I actually attached the 1x2s with some short drywall screws, just to hold them in place, and then used 2 1/2 wood screws to attach the pegboard-1x2-drywall-stud all together. This way the 1x2s are only being used as spacers, and all the load bearing screws are going into studs.

Why wouldn't you want the screws to go through the drywall? You're never going to see them, so why do you care?

Get a box of 2.5" screws and don't think too hard about this.

You want the screws mounting the 1x2s through the dry wall to have at least a 3/4 inch "bite" into the stud.
So, 3/4 for the 1x2 plus 1/2 for the dry wall plus 3/4 into the stud equals 2 min.
I like the idea of using 2.5 inch for everything.

Just don't forget the washers under the heads of the screws holding the pegboard to the 1x2s.
You need bigger heads then the screws have to resist the chance of "pull through."

You will have to do some fitting in the hardware aisle.
Washer sizing is not all that precise.
You want a hole that will fit over the shank of the screw and that gives the biggest OD.

I would position the 1x2s with finishing nails, and then put 2.5" screws through the pegboard, the 1x2, and into the stud.

1/4 peg board + 3/4 inch 1x2 + 1/2 drywall leaves you with 1 inch of screw going into the studs if you use 2 1/2 inch screws. I have always felt that the taper end of the screw does not secure much so this leaves you with less than an inch to secure it to the stubs. Give me 3 inch coarse thread screws

If you don't know the location of the wiring & plumbing that may be in the wall I would not screw more than 1" into the wall stud. I built my garage & was sure that 1" will be safe. I just put up new pegboard in my garage & have quite a bit of weight on it & no trouble. I put a screw about every 18".
