What lights to use?

I have a 20' x 30' garage with a 14' ceiling, I am trying to decide on what lights to use. I do some minor mechanical work to my vehicles, but I do alot of detailing so I need some pretty decent light. Let me hear what your ideas are.

I use fluorescent "shop lights" and they seem to work well.

Depends on how bright you want it and how much power the garage can handle.

The fluorescents don't seem to do a good enought job from 14' high, and power isn't an obstical, I have installed dedicated 200amp service to the garage. I do use 48" fluorescents in my 2nd garage since it has a standard height ceiling.

I use Metalux Brand 8' Flourescents with low temp ballasts. The quality of light difference between these and 4' "shop lights" is night and day. I have my lights mounted 12' above the floor

I use the same. The low temp ballast really helps, and the light output from the bulbs is very good. You can probably find some guidelines on how many lumens you need based on the square footage and ceiling height as well. My garage is 26X34, and I only have FOUR of the 8'ers. It does O.K., but I plan to add two or three more to brighten it up some.

My Garage is 25 x 32, I currently have 5 mounted. I do plan on another row of them to augment the existing light. Pics to follow later this weekend

Metalux or Lithonia are good quality fixtures. 12' o.f.f is good, If you want to do something trick, you could use triple tube T-5 fixtures with a reflector. You would definatly have some light then. Or use the T-8 stuff and supplement with a couple metal halide hibays for some different color.

You could also try mounting hor. on the walls to see paint defects and such, it makes life alot easier when wheeling out cars.
