A few months ago I saw a magazine in Books a Million about Home shops / Garages and almost purchased it. However it was out of date and they said the new ones would be on display that friday. I"ve returned several times and no magazine can be found. I was wondering what publications most of you get your ideas from??
Any suggesions would be appreicated. I'm into word working but I got a shop for that and I'm now thinking about building a combo motorcycle shope and game room along with a large room for a model train layout.

None. I've cancelled all of my subscriptions.

Magazines used to be informative. Now they are just pages of ads. Even the articles are nothing more than thinly veiled advertisements.

Home Workshop Machinist (or something like that) is the only one still running. I never renew a subscription. They never live up to my original expectation, and I look forward to them expiring.

In the past I hade MotorSport, Octaine, RetroCars, Practical Performance Cars and Grassrot Motorsport. The only one I have now is GM, and I dont think I will renew. I always get tired of the magazines as they seems to get stuck in the same lane. A lot of the magazines are just about toooo expensive cars wich are really not to interesting to read about over and over again :(

But I am always looking for good magazines :)

Home Shop Machinist, Hot Rod and Muscle Mustang's and Fords are the base items. I get Car Craft and Street Rodder if they go on sale around Christmas, which Source Interlink usually does. Most of my stuff re-ups in December because the sale price usually beats the "special subscriber renewal offer" that comes in the mail.

I subscribe to Excellence. I also get the SCCA mag, and the PCA mag. Used to get a lot of magazines. I like to go to Barnes and Noble and look them over for free. If there is one i like, I buy it.

I only subscribe to EVO as you get a special cover version in the UK and its a great read
almost everything I know about American and Australian cars I have read in EVO. It covers everything from the latest supercars to good value for money, fun to drive cars.

What I like best is that they tell it like it is, even though the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is nearly always the best drivers car every year, sometimes something like the Ford GT comes along and beats it :)

I also read Motorsport/Autosport

I subscribe to Rodder's Journal, Goodguys Gazette, Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Street Rodder and GameRoom (although the latter recently went "out of business due to the economic climate").

I recently picked up Wood Magazine "Great Garage Makeovers" at HD since it featured my garage, The Hot Rod Grille, in the latest issue!

Anyone else get "Tools of the Trade"?
Primarily for builders, each month they will take the latest models of various tools and compare side by side for performance, being as scientific as they can be, comfort, etc. Available on line, or hard copy (free).

Also take Hot Rod, Street Rodder and Smart Money

I usually get a few of the woodworking ones, Wood, Woodsmith, American woodworker,
Fine Woodworking,
Wood has been disappointing to me as of late, nothing I want to even think about building.
Woodsmith is a pretty good one, cause if they are building something that say uses box joints, there will be a lesson on box joints somewhere else in the magazine.

Jim

Is that "Great Garage Makeovers" just a one time publication?

I dont directly sub to it, but my grandpa sends me all his 3 month or older issues. I beleive its "Modern wood working" or something like that. GREAT magazine, not to many ads and i learn a ton from it.

Beyond that, "Gun world" just to keep up on the new stuff. Road & Track, becaue its awesome.

My odd ball sub is "Max Power". Its a UK rag, a bit pricey but quite funny to read and loads of cars from across the pond as well there unique car culture. I feel like between road & track and max power i can keep up to par with the auto world.

I reup every year at Moultrie, GA swapmeet. When I reup I normally get a bunch of Hemmings stuff, T-Shirts, hats, knives etc and the cost is cheap. The Rod Magazine, both for around $15 for a year - $7.50 EACH! I spend around $60 for everything, $1 a magazine and then the extras, well worth it.

5.0 Mustang was the only one for a long time. A few months back somebody on the net had a like for Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords for a 2 year subscription for 20 bucks. I figured what the hell it was only 20 bucks. It'll run out because I know I wont renew it.

looks like it's once a year.
I'll see if lowes has it tomorrow.
I can get it online, for $6.99, but I refuse to pay $4.00 shipping, esp since I
have a subscription to the magazine.

Bingo you found it. That's the mag I almost purchased but it said to display till that friday only. I asked the store clerk and he said come back that friday the new ones would be out and when I did they didn't have any. I failed to notice the once a year or special yearly issue.:thumbup:

the week(news)

grassroots motorsports(need to reup, but really like the variety of cars and racing)

Use to love turbo and high tech performance but haven't looked at one in a long time, same goes for

sport compact car which I think is dead now(shame, used to have good in depth tech articles and a couple really good writers)

After reading, Desired articles cut out and filed then mags are given to various friends depending on their interests, where they go from there I do not know. One of my best friends is a painter at a decent sized body shop and they pester me for most of my recycling. They have like 30 some employees and last time I was in their breakroom there were stacks of my old mags. (First thing I do when I get a mag is cut off or remove the address label and shred, no particular reason just thought it might be prudent)
