I just finished reading some classifieds, and it seems that some people throw around one word frequently... RARE!!!! This gets me, because for the most part, there are no really rare tools, just tools that are not seldom seen, because people don't usually parade their tools around in person or pictures. What is really rare, is people that use the word 'rare" within the conservative nature of the word itself. It is a rare day that I don't read someone hawking something that they say is rare. What is your rare experience with these rare tools. Please put your half baked (rare) thoughts below..... :lol_hitti

Not sure what would make a tool "Rare"...I've seen "Custom Made" tools, I've seen "Modified" tools, I've even seen "Rairly Used" Tools.
People throw around words like "Rare" along with "Vintage" and "Mint".
Instead of "Hardly seen anymore", "Old" and "Like New" or "Slighty Used"

It could be because its a tool that everyone used to break or throw out, so not many are around anymore...In that case, who wants it anyway.

Vintage depends on your age, to me its stuff from the 60's and older. To some younger people, it's stuff from the 80's. (that's just yesterday...isn't it?)

Mint tools?...I guess if it still works, and is not rusty or chewed up...its fine for me. My tools all get used, so they wouldn't stay Mint anyway.

I usually read "rare" to mean "know body wanted it when new, and now I want more money for it than it's worth"

In the auto world another misnomer is the word "restored". I wish more people would acknowledge the English language and include the word "modifications" or at least admit wheel tubs and tires big enough to fit a funnycar are not considered "restored" on a 1963 Rambler.

More and more I've seen on eBay and Craigslist that anything over a decade old - no matter the condition - is suddenly "rare," "vintage," or "classic."

Sorry, it is just an old piece of trash most of the time...

Another misbegotten descriptive word is " classic". A "classic" automobile used to be a pre WWII luxury car with a custom body. Then every twerp with a rusty stripped '57 Chevy 210 decided that their heap would sound better if described as a "classic", now "classic" encompasses 15 year old Daihatsu's with primer spots.

Older restoration = pre patch panel restoration= a couple of hundred pounds of bondo to fill the rust holes.

I picked up a Ruger hand drill about 4 years ago at a garage sale for $5.00 . as it turns out it's worth quite a bit more than that. It looks just like a Ruger MK I/II pistol with the exception of a hand crank on the top of it.. I'm no good at posting pics so you folks would have to do a search and check it out.

People get rare mixed up with valuable. To be valuable it has to be both rare AND desirable. :)

Browned on the outside with a cool, pink, center. At least that's my favorite restaurant's definition of "rare". :lol_hitti

Pipehack, that truly is a "rare" collectible you have there. If you ever decide to get rid of it, you should post it in the "classifieds" section over at rugerforum.com.

At first I wondered where you were going with that "pink center" thing! :lol_hitti

to me rare means low production or not many of them left

many people think that rare mean valuable. it does not
rare can mean its low production because its undesirable
a 427 shelby comp cobra is rare and its valuable
a pink pinto with purple interrior is rare, but it is hardly valuable

My dads description of rare is.....

1. Kill it
2. Wipe it's ***
3. Skin it
4. Wave it over the fire
5. And when you stab it with the fork, it had better go Mooo

My favorite... "needs restored"...Huh?

Another overused term is "upgrade"... as in "I upgraded my floor mats"... or "I upgraded the engine to 1000 HP" (Definitely NOT an upgrade if you want economy!).
