Im getting around to putting the cedar pickets (stained white) onto the PT rails for my fence. What nails should I use? Galvanized? Do I need stainless? Ring shank? Long Island NY if it matters. Thanks

Stainless is best, I like to use ss deck screws over nails. Anything other than SS can give you staining, however some of the new coated screws are pretty good but not really a cost savings over ss.

Stainless steel is a must with cedar. Anything else and you will have stains over time from the cedar oils.

Stainless. Both because using anything else on the cedar can lead to staining as well as having to go into the PT lumber.

Hmmm, Long Island, eh? If anywhere within range of the 'shore' and thus salt spray (guidelines usually 'suggest' using 316 within 7-15 miles of the shore. Others 'suggest' 316 with cedar all the time. YMMV), get 316 stainless fasteners and not the 'standard' 304 stainless fasteners.

I have had good results using electro-galvanized nails, but then I paint over them.

I live 6 blocks from salt water in two directions.

Most pickets are only 1/2" (actual) thickness so you really want thin nails but with a "full" head. These used to be called "box nails". You really want ardox (twisted) or ring shank nails.

Less expensive than SS are hot dipped galvanized. They will almost as long as SS and not stain. You need 3 per 6" (nomial) picket.

My ardox hot dipped galvanized are still a ***** extracting them after 25 years in Pt !
