Anything available at the local big box stores?

What are the most affordable options for the weekend wrench?

There are many option for big boxes, just search extreme boxes, a lot of guys here have them. Go to Strictly toolbox. com, they advertise on the home page of this site. Northern sells one, 72 wide triple and I think HF still offers the same box.

I personally have yet to see a toolbox deeper than 24" in a big box store and even those are somewhat rare. Don't know what the used market is like where you live but a truck or industrial brand is obtainable for a little more than a decent big box store box, sometimes even less.

never saw a 56x30 from sears. Know they had a 56x24, but at $4500, the only reason to have went with that box over a truck box would have been for the name. It has since went the way of the dodo.

What model is that?

I haven't seen anything like that in the last several years of catalogs.

Hell, I have yet to see anything deeper than 20" or maybe 22" from most any retailer.

Craftsman Industrial storage which was a rebadged waterloo Magnum was available in 36 x 21, 46 x 24, and 56 x 30 (width x depth). Last listed in my 2009 craftsman catalog

Model number 965552N got you a 13 drawer black cart and 965550N got you a 10 drawer chest.

These are solid boxes but, because of their size are not that common. They were replaced with the mega expensive yellow subamrine models in the 2009/2010 catalogs. Sadly, it appears that Waterloo no longer lists the magnum series in their 2012 online catalog. Perhaps because they make Cornwell tool chests.

HF's $700 56" is 22" deep. The next "affordable" one that I know of, new, would be an International which is 56" x 24". Price wise, shipped to your door, they are around $950 IIRC for the value series, which is still a decent box for the home guy (I own one). They are made in Canada.

Another vote for Strictly, get yourself way more box for the money even compared to the Big Box stores. Very happy with my 24" deep box, never found anything in the chain stores that was remotely close to the quality or value for the dollar.

Also...not sure of the validity of the quote, but have heard that there is a discount from strictlytoolboxes.com for being a Garage Journal member. Give those guys a call. Shannon is always more than helpful when I call them with any questions.

How many cubic inches are you going for? What I mean is, if you get a deep box, does it have to be super wide and high, also? In most cases, a 30 inch deep box will also be real long, raising the price and overall tool box volume beyond what you might want. Lista make a staggering number of sizes & configurations. You can get, for example, a 16 7/8" wide box, 28.5" deep and 33 1/2" high. The next width is 22 3/16", and so on.

That is the box I have...

They pop up occasional on the outlet site. This is the top to my box... 56x30

I bout my top and bottom on Craigslist for $700.... I thin it is a steal as the box is really well built.

And yes it was the Waterloo magnum series.
