I've tried looking through the forums to see if this has already been done, since I had no luck new thread it is!
For the financially impaired/old tool connoisseur/collector/works till "I" die person, What brands or companies should you keep an eye out for regarding old bench grinders? The likes that can be found on craigslist, garage sales or estate sales. Some of the brands that have been brought up are:
-Craftsman Block Grinders (mentioned EXTENSIVELY in the forums)
-Baldor
-Wissota

Are there other companies or brands that could be considered equivalent? Are there certain time periods to look for? Cross branding? Hunting for tools is always better when your better informed :D

On your list, you had "Bandor," did you mean Baldor? Those are high quality and $$$$.
As far as cost, parts, and assistance with a rebuild/restoration, the Craftsman block grinder seems to be a great candidate for your consideration. Torqueman2002's thread is awesome. Hope that helps and good luck with your new project.

yup, your right SuperCat I messed up the spelling :p the craftsman seems like the right one to keep an eye out for but seem to have a more inflated price now, at least around my area of California. currently going around $90 to $130.

If it is old and well used the great chances are it will become older and further used without regard to brand or fan base.

Plug it in, put a load on it, then decide.

I bought a Delta 6" bench grinder from Sams club 13 years ago for $35 bucks. It has done all I ever needed. If you , like I, have perused CL for the above mentioned brands they go quick and typically are expensive. I just don't have the need or the space for a bad *** 10" Baldor. Not to mention those things can just take off your entire arm vs. 6" that will take a finger !

Don't let this dissuade your search- those are all the brands I would look for. I have found Dayton to be a cost effective option on CL. If I found one cheap enough, I would buy it:)

Baldor, Delta/Rockwell, Wissotta, Doerr, Dayton (early models made by Doerr before they sourced from Taiwan or China), Milwaukee (made by Wissotta or Doerr), and virtually any industrial grade grinder made before the 70's.
