What product to replace windshield seal?

Hi all,

My car is a 2009 BMW 335i (E92 body) and for a while now the windshield seal has been looking pretty bad. Well today on my way to work it started disintegrating; I hit 80 MPH and a section of it ripped loose and started slapping against the roof, scaring the hell out of me.

I'm a little disappointed that they're apparently using rubber made of poop and fail, but am not really willing to pop for a windshield replacement until I actually need it and my insurance will cover it.

So I'm thinking of just ripping apart all the loose rubber and filling the resulting groove with something. Question is, what? Black RTV? or would that make it more difficult if painting or windshield replacement were required in the future?

I have a little corolla beater that the windshield was leaking bad so i took the rubber seal off and used polyurethane since i have a bunch and i can guarantee that it wont leak again! lol you can remove polyurethane but yea its a real hassle, but the car has almost 300k on it and rusting bad so i dont care

a) You are correct. My bad. A little more searching found the correct part number is 51317119711. That's $48.33 currently on Amazon, but may be less elsewhere (I see it for $37.54 shipped on eBay, and even less elsewhere, though I did not research shipping prices). The rear is I believe 51317119713 BTW.

b) Not from what I can tell. Looking at other forums, people show they scrape out the seal, clean the gap with alcohol, and apply the replacement.

c) I don't think it is about being environmentally friendly. I think someone either didn't spec the rubber correctly, or cheaped out. From what I'm seeing on google, this is a VERY common issue on this model. Either way, the cost of the mistake gets passed onto the customer. It's a ****** thing to do, but the nature of the auto industry is not about standing behind products (unless forced to for a safety recall).

Go to your local windshield shop, that's a glue in window so the seal is applied after the glass is installed. They most likely have it on a big roll and will sell you what you need. Do not use RTV unless you really want to pi33 off the installer next time you need a windshield or body work done in that area.
