Why wouldn't he still have the funds in his account? Unless this is a respected member I smell scam.

Given paypal's vagaries, I would just be a bit patient. You have been inconvenienced, but not necessarily by the GJ member, IMHO.

I called paypal and spoke to them on the phone....they are the ones who said he didnt have the funds to cover it so it defaulted to his bank account..

Paypal is known to hold funds for days before they clear to the seller's account under the guise of "it has to go through Federal Clearing House."

And then when you inform them that domestic transfers are cleared through the Clearing House same day as long as they are initiated before 4pm, they refuse to talk to you any further.

I'm not saying it's not a shady situation, but given my dealings with Paypal, i'd consider it far more likely that the blame lies with them.

this is from my email to paypal...

Thank you for contacting PayPal Customer Support. My name is Julie and I am happy to assist you today.

In researching your account, I do see that the refund has a pending status. What that means is that when the refund link was selected by the seller, they did not have all of the available funds in their PayPal balance. When there are not enough of the available funds, we will attempt to withdraw the refund from an available bank account on the seller's account. The banking transaction can take up to 3-4 business days to complete.

I'll give 5:1 odds that your funds to the seller hadn't cleared into his paypal account by the time he tried to refund you.

I JUST went through this last month with a purchase for ITBs. Took me a week to get my refund, and it was through no fault of the seller.

Call me out? Go for it. I have high feedback on over 3 major forums, Ebay, and well respected in all my person to person operations. Scam? Far from it. I sold an item "first come, first serve." The money actually had cleared into my account, and within 15mins I received an email, issued a refund, and sent it back to the buyer. I am sorry again for your troubles, however, if you have a problem with me...contact me please. I have no problem issuing my phone number to you in a PM.

Sounds like the lesson is don't send paypal info to someone if they weren't the first responder

That really has nothing to do with what i posted, but it doesn't matter now since the dude you're trying to throw under the bus is in the thread now. :)

. I sold an item "first come, first serve." .

It would seem to me that you gave out information to two, or more, people on how to pay for an item. Would it not be wise to only say sold to one person and then give out payment instructions?

IMHO The OP didn't throw anyone under the buss, he outed himself, and with an attitude. The OP was asking if it seemed like things were on the up and up, nothing more.

Also IMHO, the seller could have PM'd the OP instead of blowing a gasket in public and outing himself.

Personally I wouldn't buy anything from the seller at this point, not because of the odd paypal situation, but because of the poor handling right here.

I sell a LOT of stuff via forums and Paypal, over $30K a year, and IMHO, again, this was poorly handled.

Jim

PS The OP could have kept this in PMs as well, so all the blame isn't just on the seller.

Tony,
Pay Pal told you that it takes 3-5 days to get the funds from the senders account, and I am pretty sure that is true. If the seller transferred the funds immediately to his bank account, then that is the way it works. I would not blame the seller in any way. It is the way that Pay-Pal makes thier money, They get interest on the money for the time they "claim" it takes to transfer it back to your Pay-Pal account. No matter what they tell you, they do delay payments for this exact reason.

By "first come, first serve" it was meant as whoever sends payment first is who ends up buying the item. I am tired of playing "dibs" with individuals who claim an item, and do not send a payment off. Three people including Tony inquired about it right around the same period of time yesterday, and I treated each individual with the same respect.

Jim-

He and I have exchanged over 8 PM's in the past 24hrs, nothing hostile, all purely business.

To the OP- If you have a problem or an opinion to state with me, please keep the conversation between you and I. Also, the response in your first post is purely false...I told you in a previous PM I apologize for the inconvenience as someone sent a deposit on the ratchet and it has been sold. Refund was sent.

The problem here is that so many people get scammed so may times. Any time something funny happens, it is almost natural to think you are getting scammed. Fortunately, the OP did not call out any member by name as far as I can tell.

He was simply asking questions and rightfully concerned.

At least this is my take on the situation. I think it is obvious that neither party meant any harm and hopefully we can all walk away with no hard feelings.

Now shake hands damn it!

At the end of the day, PayPal is the true villain. Handled a little less than
Professionally on both sellers and buyers parts.

I have had paypal send my payments as echecks before on occasion, and I send/receive money all the time and my account is always in good standing. I haven't figured out why they do it on occasion, but it happens. No need to flip out...

Whoever sends payment first gets the item? So if the op would've sent the payment in first the other guy would be waiting 3-5 business days for his refund. IMHO if you're gonna operate this way, maybe you should have the funds available to offer an immediate refund to the losing buyer.

amen to that, I buy and sell a lot of parts online, and I gotta say some forums are full of people making claim to a part and then never following through, thats the beuaty of ebay, they get the bid they are obligated, the end

I also hate when sellers ask you to add paypal fee's, I see it as a convienience fee, and have no issue eating the charge so the buyer can have some sence of security in sending money to an unknown person, I'd rather buy from someone not playing those games, it tells me they aren't a serious seller

I'm just waiting for the grocery store to start charging for the fee's that they have to pay for taking credit and debit cards, now cash is almost obsolete

I think you should be patient. It seems impatience sort of caused the situation. Best to take a deep breathe and let some patience solve it.

I cannot control which way PayPal decides to issue a refund, the funds were in the account and clearly available. This is my first experience with a delay to refund the paying party, makes no sense to see a delay. Does not seem like I am the only one to have this or have known to happen. Not sure else how I can say I am sorry for this happening.
