Hey guys. I recently started looking at large boxes for my personal use and the snap on guy gave me a price of $3200 on a 18 drawer, gloss black classic 96.

Any opinions? To much to little?

Thanks,

~Jim~

I was going to buy a brand new Classic 96 in flat black for $1850. Still in the crate. This was about 6 months ago on CL.
That was an exceptional deal but I do see them time to time for 2-2500 hundred

Off the truck, I'd say that is pretty good. There is a chance of a screaming deal off of CL, but most are 78's, not 96's and the price is all over the board on used classics.

I would just ask your dealer to let you know when a trade in comes in. That way you can get a good deal and not have to pay for it all at once. If you don't have any problems paying all a once then check ebay and craigslist. But I see the classic's for $1000-$2000 a lot down here in the Jacksonville area. Also is your not in a rush t get one then just wait for that deal to come around. Ive been waiting for 4years for the right deal and finally pulled the trigger and I have a krl1023 three stories tall coming in.

Is it used? They are $5,800 new list. I just bought one on Promo for $4,800 plus the new green trim kit thrown in for free. Heck he gave me $2,200 trade on my 9 year old 78. Seems like a decent deal to me.

I really really really don't see the benefit of buying a box that costs as much as a car. It's a metal box with metal drawers... Only way I'd consider paying 5grand for a box is if it came full of tools.

Oh sh*t, so sorry.
You are absolutely correct! The ones I were talking about were 78's NOT 96's

Sorry for the bad info...

Pride of ownership, organization to make jobs go faster, protection against thieves, joy of quality, etc.

But that is why there is chocolate and vanilla. We all chose to spend our disposable income differently. I have a $350 pool cue. Some would say I wasted my money and many a good shooter would say I didn't spend enough.

Oh, to the OP. If the box is new, that's a decent deal, used its too high. If you are patient and diligently watch CL (if you are in a populated area), you will find a deal on a used box.

I bought a Classic 78,I really don't think they are much to rave about. They aren't deep, really don't seem that strong. For the same coin I'd probably buy a new Montezuma or Extreme top and bottom.Maybe I'm spoiled on my old industrial cabinet but the Classic's just don't seem that sturdy.

I'm not a huge fan of the Classic's myself, nothing wrong with them per se, just a bang for the buck issue more then anything, its really not hard to get a KRL off the truck for similar pricing if your not in a rush and can wait for deals or incentives.....
All things being equal, and I do not have any real world experience with Montezuma or Extreme, never seen a real one in person...If you needed a box tomorrow I'd suggest a MAC Tech series over going the Classic route...the Tech series is an extremely well built box and can probably be had for less money too boot.

When you start limiting what you buy you are screwing yourself.
Who care what year.
Bottom line Craigslist will be much cheaper. I would think you could find one for under $1500. I buy up businesses and I sold 4 boxes the first part of the year. I did very well but I did not get $1800 for the top box.

The market is flooded with boxes. It looks like everyone broke the bank when buying tool boxes. Snap-on are so over price to begin with that I laugh my *** off.
They are 5 times over priced as all the name brand tool boxes are.
I spend part of the year in Australia and I get to Europe every other year. The rest of the world makes great tool boxes and they are cheaper.

Have any of you seen the new Harbor freight 52 inch box. The top and bottom are about $1300. 25 inches deep. Fantastic box for the money.

I had really good luck with my classic 78. I had it nine years it sat in dusty garages on the farm, and was moved around with me over the last several years multiple times. It was still in perfect shape when I traded it in. I got a lot of use out of that little thing. I mean sure the Masters series are double wall and better built but for me at least for now do not justify the jump in price. I am content with my new 96 for a long time to come.
