I have an old beat up craftsman industrial one. Its either a 4" or 4.5". I do a little bit of fab work and mostly mechanical jobs, it does it's job well and hasn't failed yet.

I've had a 7" grinder for about thitry years that I've used maybe six times.
It scares me.

I don't normally do heavy fabrication, just cleaning up cuts and welds on lighter gage steel.

4 1/2" is what is comfortable to me.

Re: georgegj

You never know :)

Pretty sure I'm going to grab

- two 4.5" Metabo's 850W one each for grinding and flap disk

- one 5" Metabo 1010W for cutting

Will use my old 500W Ryobi for wire wheel

I can't find a 6" for the life of me and 7" seems too big for my needs.

Sounds like a good plan. I wish I would have just gone straight to Metabo and Fein rather than the stops at Bosch, DeWalt, and Makita.

I only use my Makita 7" grinder if I have a job requiring major stock removal.

Every time I dig it out, I think that it should have a seat and a steering wheel!
