I have a 42' × 40' steel wrapped work shop with a 16' ceiling, it has a forced air furnace with a/c. I am looking for suggestions on fan size to pull the warm air down in the winter. I am located in S/W Wisconsin, the shop will mainly be used for tinkering on cars, small wood working projects and just hanging out. Any input will be appreciated.

I've got a 48'x64'14' that I split in 1/2, and I currently have 2 of the 52" Menards "industrial" fans in the one half(32'x48') and they seem to do a good job of pushing the warm air down, but it hasn't been cold enough to really prove them out yet. I got them on sale a couple months ago for $39.99 each.

You can get a 72" at Lowes that looks similar to the large fans from the Big *** Fan Company. It's $299, found it on sale a few weeks ago for $249. Also includes remote control. It has that industrial look.

Maybe this is a dumb idea, but would a vent pipe running from the ceiling to the floor and powered by a squirrel cage fan be a better way to get the heat back down? The idea being that you could direct the warm air in the direction you want it to go.

Amazon has some real nice westinghouse commercial fans for about $60 a piece. I have a couple and they are top notch. Steel blades and really strong motor.

The bigger the better. The more the merrier. The maxim is always

correct for any application. I would jam 2 or 3 pipe mounted fans

up there, all controlled separately for tuning to various prevailing

wx/temperature conditions. A squirrel cage and ductwork would also

work well, but you may find you would need several of them as well,

or at least a network of ductwork, and at least one healthy 2 or 3

speed squirrel cage to really move some air. You could add shutters

to the air outlets to make it comfortable, and during the summer, to

keep the place semi-comfortable, redirect the down flow to the out-

side of the building

I have 2 big 52" ceiling fans hard wired in my 28'x28' shop.

My 2 Vornado Shop fans out blow them 10:1, use only 84 watts of power, and are movable into a window when needed.

Yes but when the goal is to move a fair amount of air throughout the shop, it works.

My shop is different in that the warm is in the floor and the ceiling is actually a little colder.

My two spaces are 24 x 36 and I have one 52 in each area -- my ceilings are not flat ... I have them blowing up most of the winter to keep the air moving around and out of the peak.
