What size female Torx socket?

My GM 3800 V6 has threaded studs all over the place with the integral male Torx on the end. If a 10mm flanged nut threads over the stud, what size is the male Torx on the end?

I don't have any E-Torx sockets as of yet; otherwise, I'd do that.

I don't know. Can't you put an E torx socket over the stud? Do you not have internal Torx sockets? if not head to harbor freight and get a cheap set for measuring purposes only.
I think they're E8 or E10. I just try one on for size.

i'd say wither E5 or E6. Possibly E7 but i doubt it. I have a nice set of Snap-on ones, 1/4" and 3/8". Love 'em.

When you say a 10mm flanged nut, are you about a nut the fits in a 10mm socket? If so, I think we're talking E7. I took a bolt with a 10mm hex and the non threaded lead in part fit in the E7 but, not the threads which would be like your stud I think.

I bought a set at sears lisle brand and it was a good deal... I haven't used them, but if I needed to I knew I would have them. Also can you use a torx bolt with vise grips to remove and or tighten it? Weld a nut on the bolt? Just a thought if you want to save some money... If you were closer I would lend you my set to help out.

It is either an E8 or E10.
I am leaning toward an E8.

Or the other smaller ones?

Both sets are good. However, you can get the Craftsman one for half off often on sale. The only draw backs to those sets is that they don't contain an E4 or the larger E18 or E20 sizes. The E4 is needed for removing some GM trim like upper steering column covers and some ignition switches. The larger sizes are used sometimes to hold seat rails in. You can't really beat the overall value of the sets though.

Yeah, I've seen those pretty cheap, and there are a bunch for sale.
You would need clearance for that ratcheting wrench head though.
Plus, they are made in Taiwan, so they are perfect for the OP

I was in the midst of removing the throttle body today for cleaning and discovered that the throttle body is not coming off unless that stud comes out. And another thing: What's the chance of that stud being frozen in there?

If you strip the e-torx, and can't fit a stud puller in there, try the tip by foul_ball

By-the-way, the reason I wanted to know the specific size is because I plan on collecting those precision machined Apex E-Torx sockets one at a time; I imagine they're at least $10 each.

I tried doing a Google search but I don't even think I'm using the right name for the things.

A 1/4"-20 bolt takes a 7/16" socket.

A 5/16"-18 bolt takes a 1/2" socket.

A 3/8"-16 bolt takes a 9/16" socket.

I'm wishing to get to know these e-torx studs (or whatever they're called) the same way as I know bolts. I'm thinking there must be a chart somewhere that tells which stud takes which size socket.

Seriously, go get a set (you're gonna have to anyway) and see which one fits best. All this other talk is just speculation at best.

You might get lucky and find a chart, but then (typical GM) you might find taht the GM fastener doesn't follow what's on the chart....

Recently, I did a intake gasket job with my brother on a similar GM based v6 engine; allot of studs came out with the nut on the stud not moving. This is probably not the way its supposed to be but quite a few studs came out that way; in our experience with the job, this is a common problem.

You didnt mention the year or application. I looked up a 2000 GXP L67, and found a stud PN 24504462 for the throttle body to supercharger. Go to gmpartsdirect.com to verify that your application uses the same part number.

Anyhow, for a PN 24504462, this is threaded M6x1.0 on both sides. 9.5mm of internal thread with loctite coating, 16mm of external thread, and an E5 drive on the external side.

If you have a different PN for your stud, let me know and I'll see if I can find some info on that.
