Hello been hangin around awhile, lot of great info here. I am building a garage and was wanting to know what size headers to put over the garage doors. I am building in Ohio, out in the country and have no code, insections or permits. The trusses will sit on the wall with the headers and they are 36 six feet long 6 /12 pitch with a attic room. The garage is 36 feet deep and 50 feet long with four nine foot doors and 2x6 framed walls. Any thoughts? Thanks Dave

That is a big roof with attic room and a heck of load because of it. Up here in Canada we need to size structural members by loads live, dead, wind and snow. Are 2 2 x 12's really large enough for that? I'd want to make sure that two jack studs per end was enough bearing area and that your foundation/footings in those support areas is sufficient for all of that concentrated load. Most lumber yards have span charts to put you in the ballpark but that is a heck of a big building and I'd not build it without having a formal engineered design. It'll save you time, money and grief in the long run.

Sent a pm. Dimensional lumber IS NOT acceptable in a condition like this. It may work for a single man door or window, but the loads add up quick over 9'.

I agree with Jeremy. If this is a clear span your load bearing walls are carrying a lot of wieght. Not only the roof/snow load but also the load for the attic room. I'm not familiar with the snow loads in your area but I think your looking at a 5 1/4"x11 7/8" Microllam LVL beam (minimum). What ever lumber yard that is supplying the materials should be able to provide you with the info you need. If not find another lumber supplier.
