Good afternoon everyone, i'm in the process of redoing an existing garage at my house. its a 16'x21' with a single garage door and a single walk door on the front. I am having a slab poured this Friday(super excited). Anyways the back of the garage has a pretty decent view out of it and i want to add 2 windows to the back wall. I was wondering what size windows you guys are using in your garage? I do want them to slide open, i don't care if its vertically or horizontally. I'm not really concerned with security as i live in the middle of no where. Thanks for the input guys!!

The fewer vertical studs you have to cut, the easier it is to do and the smaller the header that is required. I would call some roofing, siding and window suppliers in your area, the ones used by contractors. The ones around here have "dead stock" which are windows that were ordered wrong or ordered and not picked up. Our suppliers usually have a list of the ones sitting in their warehouse and sometimes they can be bought for pennies on the dollar.
I would put in a double hung that is wide enough for a window air conditioner.

I'd try to figure out space planning first and then windows - are you going to have benches, cabinets...etc that would need to be built around any windows you may have? If you're keeping the wall free of benches/cabinets then I'd go as big as money allows - I saw a 2 car garage in someones hillside home once where the back wall was nearly all windows and it was GORGEOUS! If I was putting in benches/cabinets I'd design those knowing I wanted some space for windows and see what those spaces ended up looking like based on my bench/cabinet requirements.

Personally I like long/narrow windows, vertical or horizontal (this could also be multiple windows right next to each other instead of one bigger window). Anything that's close to square or looks like your average house window is fine but just boring IMO and I like to add some interesting design whenever I have the opportunity.

In your case I would use ones more towards the vertical size. This in order to not use up more useable wall space as necessary. You can never have too much wall space for shelving, cabinets, etc

Personally, I would skip the windows for security purposes. Being "in the middle of nowhere" can also mean that people will break in because there are no neighbors or traffic to scare the potential thieves away.

If you really want windows, I would put a smaller, casement type window in, or something that can difficult to climb into. Or put a piece hot rolled steel bar in the middle of the window to help deter someone.

Thanks for the ideas so far guys. I'm leaning towards putting my tool box in the middle of the back wall and benches on both sides with the windows above the benches, maybe even a bench over the top of the box.
