I'll be running a standard 200 amp panel a distance of 250 feet from the source.What gauge wire need this be? I prefer copper if the price difference wont break the bank.

Is this for a main service or for a subpanel?
And whether copper breaks the bank or not is something only u can answer but for most it would. Also, nothing wrong with AL feeders and service entrances...

Oh and there will def be a price difference,prob close to double the price for copper. You have to figure out which one you will go with because that will determine your pipe size also

I'm think Mustang had a typo, he meant 3/0, as Wylie stated, aluminum feeders are a whole lot more economical, copper service entrance could cost you 3 times more, on that distance. What code cycle are you on? have you did any load calculations that you would need in your new building? You could use 4/0 aluminum and it would work just fine.
I just built a pole barn myself, I used 4/0 alum. URD, I think it was about $1.56 a foot, this is a 3 conductor assembly, the URD cant enter the building, but you could take it to the line side of your meterbase and then switch over to copper into your panel. The URD is a direct burial cable or you can put it in pipe (which is what I did, because of the rocks in my soil there) You need to size for voltage drop and how much load you will have
