We are having a detached garage built and the existing driveway is being removed today. On the existing house there is a gutter downspout that directs water onto the existing driveway (which is going away temporarily). I would like to route the downspout water to the back of the house instead of onto the driveway. It's about a 60 ft run from the downspout to the "back" of the house.

I was wondering what sort of pipe I should use for this downspout drain purpose? 4"/5" Schedule 40 PVC? Corrugated black plastic? I plan to bury this pipe 12"-18" deep.

For about the next 3 months there will be bare dirt in this area where the downspout drain pipe will have to run, but then once the detached garage is complete the whole area will be covered with the new concrete driveway.

Thanks for any advice.

Use the 4" thin-walled rigid drain pipe unless this is a massive amount of water or you expect heavy loads across it routinely.

I have had great luck with what the HD calls triple wall drain pipe. It is 4", available in 10 foot lengths, and is white smooth on the outside, black corrugated middle, and then a smooth white layer on the inside.

I've done runs over 100 feet long with it.

The only time I would use something else is if it was going under a gravel road and really shallow.
