Got this last week and don't recall seeing one like this before. Does this style have a specific name? And what was it mainly used for? By the looks of it its very old.

interesting. I could never imagine so many different axe heads. On the other hand I wonder why this amazes me? Men are very imaginative and try new things or design to improve the current technology. This is why the advertising agencies coined the PHRASE "NEW and IMPROVED". LOL.

The coolness factor of this axe is what made me grab it. Maybe hand forged in a blacksmith shop many years ago when he needed a new improved design. The protective guard could be his improved design addition also.

The downward curve on that makes me wonder if it's not for limbing a fallen tree.

NJ Marty you got a good eye, yes indeed it has that coolness factor about it.
Woody, gotta love the coolness factor. Now I need to find me an 8" 200lb vise with the coolness factor, they seem to be eluding me.

I'm wondering what the functional differences are between these axe head types?! :dunno:

Probably has some value now . . . JUST AS IT IS . . . thus I'd not rush right in and tear out handle and try to make "new" . . don't do it.

Purpose might depend on WHERE you got it ??? Was it in coastal town that would have had shipbuilding?? Or was it from back country where it might have been "log cabin" axe that early settler might have had??

+1 on COOL factor . . . . I'd make it display item while you research.

Nice find & totally agree on the coolness factor.
I think you may be on to something as far as being hand forged by a blacksmith, that protective guard being the key.
If you want to take the time to post it on the blacksmith site below, someone there might give you a definitive answer. Like here, there's a lot of knowledge & talent on the site.
