That's metric for 1/4 inch

yep, you see 3.2 and 4.8 and 5.5 for the same reasons.

although 5.5MM is a DIN standard (true metric, but approximates 7/32),

4.5mm is in some kits but no Idea why...:dunno:

I used a 4.5mm once. Had 4.5 and 5.5 mm sockets for years and always wondered what one fit. Rebuilt my stihl MS660 and used it for a nut on a switch terminal if I remember correctly.

3.2mm is for M1.6 so is a proper metric size, but is also close enough to 1/8"
6.3mm is metric for 1/4 hex, but is also the nut size for 4 BA, which in my experience is one of the most common BA sizes, there must have been millions of 4 BA electrical connections at one time, plus we used it for face plate screws until we switched over to M3.5.
4.5mm is not a standard metric, but is close enough to 3/16"

But a bit short of the mark. I've got a Chicom knurling tool for my lathe that has knurl pins exactly 6.4mm in diameter, making it utterly useless for any normal knurls.

So annoying.

We had bolts today on a cabinet that nothing metric nor Sae would fit.
New manufacture, just an odd bolt, nutsert, and thread combo.
We put the top on to a hf44.
I'll mic the bolt head tomorrow and report back.

We're **** canning the cabinet.
It's a factory base for a Smithy Ltd 3n1.
Free minus a top to anyone who wants it. Ikea cutting board would look great.
Five drawers and two open storage spots.
Pic available. Grey lighter than craftsman, and black.

Was 4mm or close to US standard 8-32? Typical 4mm is M4-.7 but there is M4-.75 that pops up now and then. Snap On even has the taps and dies. If you look for fasteners you find almost nothing. There are some weird sizes out there the nose piece on a Dremel is 3/4-12.

I have one of those, I found it. I figured it came from a Metric only kit that had screwdriver bits. It's an Ultra Pro.

Maybe whitworth, which is still used in some sizes.

Father in law found a 6.3mm socket made by Benchtop. Thought I would add to this thread instead of making a new one. So odd…

I would be really interested in what the broached size actually measures. Do you have a ball gauge? In particular, I would like to see if it would actually fit a 1/4" hex or is a smidge too small.

I scrolled through a dozen or so sockets in your first link and see no 6.3mm
I think what you may be seeing is reference to drive size,1/4", converted for some reason to metric.
I own a 1/2" drive ratchet from Europe that is marked 12.7mm.
It still amuses me that Europe uses our fractional inch dimensions for drive size.

WOW!
My guess is made for the rest of world market that may encounter 1/4" fasteners from these parts. 6.35 is way to odd to be a deliberate choice for a ROW fastener. Given the OP example of "Benchtop" I think it a fair guess that tolerances will be loose enough that this "6.3"mm will comfortably fit on a 1/4" screw head.

If you live in a 100% metric world, it would be more odd to have a socket labeled 1/4" than a 6.3mm..

For those of us living in a mixed world where the finest units of metric measurements are typically mm, the idea of fractional mm measurements seems odd. But I'd imagine other folks around the world never give it a moments thought. (y)

I've run into that recently with Vevor on severalbolts in 2 different products. A size that 16, 17mm, 5/8" and 11/16" won't fit.
Plus the bolt head and nut aren't the same, so bolt was 17mm and nut the no size.

Ended up with a "looks to be 3/8" or 1/2"" extension once that didn't fit any ratchet or socket in a tool kit. Was a USA brand.

Was early 2000s pre internet knows all. We figured either made in error, or some sort or specialized extension made that size for a purpose that got mixed in somehow. Metric sized drive?

I took over a toolroom that had been neglected for years, so who knows.
