I'll be needing to upgrade my MIG tank soon, I see lots of used tanks for sale around. Is there any reason an O2 cylinder couldnt be used for co2? What about other cylinders? I know acetylene cylinders have cork or something in them so they are a no go.

You can buy CO2 tanks from welding suppliers, fire extinguisher places and beer making supply places. You definitly cant use an acetylene tank for co2 im pretty sure you need a tank made specifically for c02

I'm pretty sure that no dealer is going to fill any tank with a gas other than that which it is designed for.

While most HP tanks are made the same, and can be used interchangibly, the valves are different and depending on the type of gas may need to be cleaned or treated. Basically, yes you could as long as the pressure rating is correct and you have the valve you could, but you would probably need your own fill station since no one would fill it.

LG , Can't you just trade your tank in for another , or get a bigger tank. With all the tank tests that have to be done. I found it way cheaper to exchange my tanks at the welding supply.

Here we have a 99 year lease on large tanks and tanks below 122cf can be customer owned or leased.By exchanging my tanks I do not pay a monthly fee nor have the tanks tested as it's their problem

If you own your tank you can swap it out, but if it hasn't been filled in a while it may need to be tested. If it is bad then the may charge you for the testing of the tank. If it is good, then usually they will just give you another full tank. When it's empty, swap it for another. They are usually pretty good at keeping records as to who owns and who leases

co2 tanks are different than O2 or argon tanks. co2 tanks are rated at a lower pressure and most dealers will not swap them for the high pressure tanks. My supply store will swap between oxygen, 75/25, argon etc. A co2 is good just for co2

A lot of CO2 tanks are older HP tanks that no longer meet the max expansion spec. at the higher pressure. When they hydro test the tank as long as it's still under the max expansion @ CO2 tank pressure, it's fine for use and is remarked as CO2, DOT dated, then re-valved for CO2, filled up, and placed back into service.
